Modules

The Clinic for Trauma Surgery, Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery contributes to three of the UMG’s modular teaching modules.

 

Module 2.3 – Basic medical skills II

Coordinator: Dr. med. J.-C. Ammon

In this module, students in their 2nd clinical semester will learn the basic skills needed to work in the medical profession. Students will mainly learn about examination techniques, wound care, how to change dressings, and the basics of osteosynthesis procedures. In addition, the students will sit in on the operating theatre (bedside teaching) and gain insight into the processes of surgical disciplines.

 

Module 4.2 – Musculoskeletal disorders

Coordinator: Prof. Dr. med. S. Sehmisch

In this module, students in their 4th clinical semester will learn the basics regarding injuries and diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. One focus of this module is on increasing students’ knowledge regarding a) diagnostics and therapy following fractures and injuries, and b) the basics of polytrauma management. The module also focuses on degenerative musculoskeletal diseases. Major diseases are discussed and demonstrated with reference to pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostics and therapy. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the management of musculoskeletal tumours is also discussed.

Students will sit in on our clinic’s emergency department (bedside teaching) in this module, allowing them to gain intensive insights into emergency treatment regarding injuries of all degrees of severity.

 

Module 6.X – Revision course

Coordinator: PD Dr. med. L. Weiser

In this module, students in their 6th clinical semester will run through a symptom-oriented refresher course concerning the clinical disciplines. Based on the knowledge gained from previous semesters, the lecturers will use typical symptoms and clinical presentations to teach the students the clinical diagnostic approach. Students will also learn about accident mechanisms and typical injury patterns, imaging procedures and selected therapy options. The topics will predominantly be examined through an interdisciplinary lens. The final part of the module involves running an interactive case simulation of polytraumatised patients. This case demonstration will be carried out on an interdisciplinary basis alongside colleagues from the diagnostic radiology department and general, visceral and paediatric surgery departments.
